About Bioremediation

What is Bioremediation?                                                                                      Bioremediation is a natural process that uses microscopic "bugs" or microbes to eat certain harmful chemicals, such as those found in gasoline and oil spills.  When microbes completely digest the chemicals, they change them into water and harmless gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2).

The EPA and Bioremediation                                                                                        The EPA in their Citizens Guide to Bioremediation state that bioremediation allows natural processes to clean up harmful chemicals in the environment... Once harmful chemicals are cleaned up and microbes have eaten their available "food," the microbes die. The EPA  has used bioremediation to clean up many polluted sites and is now currently using bioremediation at several Superfund sites across the country.
